Four ‘UNTOLD’ SOFT SKILLS TO EXCEL IN LIFE*
*Text: 2 Kings 1:1-15*
*Theme*: Talent + Hard work is not enough. Wisdom, humility, adaptability and ownership will take you where gifts cannot.
*INTRODUCTION*
1. *Story*: King Ahaziah was sick and sent to consult idols instead of God. God told Elijah to tell him he would die. The King sent 3 captains with 50 men each to arrest Elijah.
2. *The Result*: Captain 1 & 2 came with pride and arrogance and fire consumed them. Captain 3 came with humility and he lived and fulfilled the mission.
3. *Big Idea*: You can be talented, educated, hardworking and still fail if you lack these 4 soft skills.

*BODY: THE 4 SOFT SKILLS FROM THE 3 CAPTAINS*
*1. THE ABILITY TO LEARN FROM THE MISTAKES OF OTHERS*
*Text: 2 Kings 1:9-13*
- Captains 1 & 2 had the same assignment and died the same way.
- Captain 3 watched what happened and CHANGED his approach.
- *Truth*: Wise people don’t wait to touch fire before knowing it burns. _Proverbs 22:3_ – “The prudent sees danger and hides himself”
- *Application*:
– In school: Learn a skill now because you see others graduate with no job
– In business: Study why others failed before you start
– In life: Don’t repeat your parents’/friends’ mistakes
- *Question*: What are you seeing people go through that you’re refusing to learn from?
*2. THE ABILITY TO RECOGNIZE AND RESPECT AUTHORITY*
*Text: 2 Kings 1:13* – “The third captain fell on his knees before Elijah and begged…”
- Elijah was a “man of God”. The 3rd captain recognized the anointing and approached with humility.
- Captains 1 & 2 said “Man of God, COME NOW!” – Arrogance.
- *Truth*: _Romans 13:1_ – “Let everyone be subject to the governing authorities”. _Hebrews 13:17_ – Respect those over you.
- *Application*:
– In workplace: That boss/mentor may not be smarter, but they have what you need. Approach with respect.
– In church: Honor men of God, parents, elders. God lifts people through people.
- *Truth*: You can’t go far if you disrespect every authority because “you’re older or more educated”
*3. THE ABILITY TO QUICKLY ADJUST TO SITUATIONS REGARDLESS OF YOUR POSITION*
*Text: 2 Kings 1:13* – A captain kneeling down
- He had title, soldiers, and the king’s backing. But when life was at stake, he adjusted.
- He didn’t say “I’m a captain”. He said “Please have respect for my life”
- *Truth*: _Philippians 2:5-7_ – Jesus laid aside His position to save us. Adjustment is TEMPORARY.
- *Application*:
– Degree holder doing delivery/online business to survive? That’s wisdom, not shame.
– Don’t be too rigid. “My status won’t allow it” keeps many people broke.
– Bend so you don’t break. Adapt to the season you’re in.
- *Question*: What do you need to “kneel down” on temporarily to survive and rise later?
*4. THE ABILITY TO OWN YOUR LIFE AND TAKE CONTROL OF YOUR MIND*
*Text: Background – 2 Kings 1:2, 16*
- King Ahaziah kept sending people to die because he refused to take responsibility. He gave control of his life to idols and other men.
- The 3rd captain took control: “My life is in my hands. I will change my approach”
- *Truth*: _Proverbs 4:23_ – “Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it”. _Galatians 6:5_ – “Each one should carry their own load”
- *Application*:
– Stop blaming government, parents, economy. Take responsibility.
– Don’t let people think for you. People will always protect THEIR interest first.
– Renew your mind _Romans 12:2_. Your life goes where your mind goes.
- *Biggest soft skill*: If you don’t own your life, someone else will own it for you.

*CONCLUSION / ALTAR CALL*
1. *Recap*: Talent without wisdom = Captains 1 & 2. Wisdom + Humility + Adaptability + Ownership = Captain 3 who succeeded.
2. *Charge*: Check your life. Which of these 4 are you missing?
3. *Prayer Point*:
– “Lord, give me wisdom to learn”
– “Lord, break my pride to respect authority”
– “Lord, give me grace to adjust”
– “Lord, help me take control of my life and mind”
*Final Word*: _Ecclesiastes 10:10_ – “If the axe is dull and its edge not sharpened, more strength is needed, but skill will bring success.”
