Among the ancient settlements of the Yakurr people stands Idomi, a community whose history is woven from migration, sacrifice, courage, communal solidarity, and an enduring determination to thrive against all odds. Long before modern political structures and contemporary development initiatives emerged, the ancestors of Idomi had already laid the foundation of a society built upon hard work, integrity, self-reliance, and communal responsibility.
The story of Idomi is not merely the history of a town; it is the story of a people who transformed adversity into strength and whose legacy continues to inspire future generations.
The Origins of Idomi
Oral traditions trace the origins of Idomi to the mid-seventeenth century, around the 1660s, during the migration of early kinsmen from Akpa. This migration was part of the broader movement of peoples seeking fertile lands, security, and opportunities for settlement.
According to ancestral accounts, a group of migrants paused around a remarkable tree known as the Focus Tree. It was there that destiny intervened. Among the travelers was a woman who was heavily pregnant and nearing delivery. As the migration continued toward what is now known as Ukpawen, she and her husband were left behind to await the birth of their child.
What began as a temporary stop would eventually become a permanent settlement. Around that sacred location, a new community emerged. The settlement became known as Ilomi, a name that over time evolved into Idomi through linguistic adaptation and colonial-era documentation.
From those humble beginnings, a thriving community was born.
A Land Blessed by Nature
The elders often spoke of a prophecy that Ilomi would be richly blessed with both human and natural resources. Time would prove the wisdom of that prophecy.
The land surrounding Idomi possesses fertile soil capable of sustaining agriculture and supporting generations of farmers. Vast vegetation, forests, streams, and mineral deposits have contributed to the area’s economic potential.

The announcement was widely seen as long-awaited recognition of the community’s historical importance and developmental potential.
For many indigenes, including those living far from home, the news generated excitement and optimism about future opportunities.
However, political realities and competing interests among neighboring communities altered the outcome. The dream of hosting the local government headquarters ultimately did not materialize, and the expectations surrounding Ugep North were redirected into what became Abi Local Government Area.
Though disappointing, this episode demonstrated the community’s political significance and its continued relevance in regional affairs.
Education and Human Capital
Perhaps the greatest resource of Idomi is its people.
Over the years, the community has produced distinguished sons and daughters who have excelled in academics, medicine, law, politics, religion, science, sports, business, and the arts.
Teachers, professors, doctors, lawyers, engineers, public servants, entrepreneurs, clergy, and scholars from Idomi have contributed to national development while serving as ambassadors of their homeland.
Their achievements affirm the long-held belief that the true wealth of any society lies in the quality of its human resources.
